Marine Le Pen · criminal prosecution · misuse of public funds · election law · ineligibility

Was Marine Le Pen convicted over European Parliament assistants, and can she stand for election?

Yes. The Paris criminal court convicted her of embezzlement of public funds on 31 March 2025 and imposed four years in prison, two to be served, and five years of ineligibility with provisional execution. On 7 July 2026 the Paris Court of Appeal upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence to three years, one to be served under electronic monitoring, a fine of 100,000 euros and 45 months of ineligibility of which 30 are suspended. The 15 firm months had already run under provisional execution. She has appealed to the Cour de cassation, which said it could rule by early April 2027, so the conviction is not yet final.
